Ma was a brilliant gardener. She could grow anything anywhere. Even though there was only a small strip at the front of her house and the back garden was covered over, these spaces were still brimming with flowers and plants in containers. Potted flower gifts, would always be planted outside and the abundant blooms Ma produced out of just one plant was amazing to behold. I gave Ma my collection of succulents and heathers, when I moved house 20 years ago and they are still alive and flourishing today! She could recognise edible plants and would sometimes forage for blackberries and greens in the local area - even though it is an urban city. It’s eye opening what plants you come across when you’re out and about, in the most unusual places and she taught me about how to look at spaces in a different way and notice things. She would always be giving away cuttings of her plants and receiving them from others and loved sharing these little miracles of life. One time she got so fed up with my overgrown garden she cleared the whole thing herself single handedly. It took hours. Her energy and drive was amazing! The joy in Ma’s face when seeing beautiful flowers and plants was lovely to behold.
